From the Editor (November 2012)
They (the folks at IBM) are serious this time. The company is dropping support for IBM i 5.4 at the end of September 2013. So if you're still developing apps for that almost 7-year-old version of the operating system, then perhaps it's time to consider how you can encourage your company to make the switch or learn more about it so you're ready when it happens.
True, IBM has said it will offer fee-based support for those who need to hang onto 5.4 a bit longer. But regardless, companies should plan for the upgrade, which includes the program conversion that's required to move to one of the TWO major versions that have been released since.
And you don't have to go far to at least learn what you have to look forward to in IBM i 7.1 in the way of security. Expert Patrick Townsend wrote our November cover story, in which he waxes poetic on the gems in 7.1's security features, including automatic encryption.
I'm thankful November is in your mailbox, and I hope that you are, too!
