John Earl, our long-time colleague and contributor to iPro Developer and its predecessors, passed away January 3 after a long battle with brain cancer. I first met John at a COMMON conference in the early 1990s. He was energetically discussing the need for data encryption on the IBM AS/400, with one of IBM's security architects. Mel, Like you I remember bumping into John in several airports over the years as we traveled from one event to another. John always had a smile and time to chat which always made the airplane wait more than tolerable. My first experience with John was at a local user group meeting in Chicago and I immediately gravitated toward him and his sessions at subsequent events like COMMON. While he left us much too soon, he did leave us and the community much more secure in our journey in to the Internet with IBM i. Sadder but wiser thanks to John's help, Mike Pavlak
